Go up Uzupio Gatve - as you enter the state there is a nice bar by the riverside, worth a visit - further up take the left onto Kriviu Gatve at the junction with the statue, the bar I really loved is maybe half a mile further uphill on the left side of the road, enter via a courtyard and it becomes a big beer garden. Not especially cheap or anything just delightful views of the city if it's sunny.
For local's dive bars and bizarre Soviet-era ultra-cheap cafes you need near the train stations. It all seemed quitesafe compared to eg Leeds. The bars and cafes on Pilies right in the heart of Old Town are all very pleasant. Shit-hot kebab shop there too. There is also a pretty amazing jazz record basement 'Thelonius' at Stikilou. Bar across the road from there was the most expensive we found. In that area it's all nightclubs...The courtyard near the Cathedral is pretty nice for meandering round in daytime.
Zante was waay too hot in middle of freak heatwave. Kate loved it but all the flies got me foul tempered. Amazing coastline like I've never seen but have come back feeling like shit from excess and ready to take the 12 steps. So glad to see rain. The heat was mental and made us both trip out a bit.
